The State of Jefferson (Then and Now)
As early as 1852, the hardy settlers of the self -proclaimed State of Jefferson began to rally against the California and Oregon governments. The autonomous and determined spirit of border-county residents perseveres today, and nowhere is this better evidenced than in the character of the communities that remain.

Wonderful book.
My grandma (Bernita Tickner) co-authored this book with Gail Jenner, they devoted all their energy into making their books educational and accurate. I highly recommend reading this one and researching the other books they wrote.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.
This book would benefit from having a map describing the extent of the State of Jefferson and the growth of that concept over time. As an amateur historian, it would be great to have such a visual added to this book. The images are great and there should be a newer version published to further the understanding of such an independent mind set and the potential value of such a state. Would the State of Jefferson be sustainable as such over a long time? Maybe?....

A Fascinating History of little known State of Jefferson
For history buffs, this volume is a unique collection of photos of the mythical State of Jefferson, the area between Oregon and California. Lots of people don't know that this was a real historical movement, and the people even declared themselves a state, right before Pearl Harbor. A fun look at the history of the movement that started in the 1850s. Some of the photos I enjoyed most were the old ones of the miners and local Shasta tribe and the old towns. Some great ones of Mt. Shasta and old roads and bridges. It makes a great gift for someone who has everything and likes to read, especially history. I highly recommend this book! Lots of fun. I'd love to see a sequel.
